Since the demise of the cold war and the glamour of the spy industry as demonstrated by the James Bond movies the art of the "bug" listening, electronic eavesdropping has lost its appeal somewhat in the mainstream media, being replaced by the coolness of CSI and forensic investigation . However in real life the diversity and presence of "the bug" has gone from strength to strength from prison cell to corporate boardroom and in all parts in-between of today's world, you will find them (or not as the case maybe). They can be in you light fitting, behind the plaster of the wall, your cell phone can be converted into an remote listening bug. Scary isn't it, well for the increasing sophistication of the bugs so is the increasing sophistication of the bug detectors which find them. These "bug detectors" are called non-linear junction detectors, or (NLJD) for those in the know , it's a device that illuminates a small region of space with high-frequency, RF energy. Any "non linear junction" such as a call phone sim card in the vicinity for example-- will receive this energy, and because of the non-linear nature of the junction, it will rectify it, re-emitting the frequency of it on multiples of the original illumination frequency or harmonic. The detector has a sensitive receiver tuned for these harmonics, as well as appropriate processing and displays to make their presence known to the user of the detector.

The NLJD is correspondingly capable of detecting almost any un-shielded electronics, even if the electronics are on or off. And so for each spying device so also should there be its nemesis in terms of detection.
